Boss Tacos: A year in, King Jefe makes its own throne

FLORENCE, S.C. – If your idea of Mexican food has long consisted of hard shell beef tacos and sauce-covered burritos, it’s past time to make a trip to King Jefe in downtown Florence.

The funky little Latin fusion restaurant on Irby Street is drawing crowds from near and far on a daily basis, nearly a year after its owners began making waves about branching out from their initial successful restaurant project: Tubb’s Shrimp & Fish Co.

“There are people who haven’t tried us yet simply because they heard we may have something like tuna on a taco,” co-owner Kyle Hardee said. “But what we’ve seen is that when people open their minds to what Mexican and Latin flavors can be, they really like it.”

The theory of opening people’s minds to new flavors has worked out for King Jefe just as well as it did for the still-popular Tubb’s, which brings a unique flair to traditional Southern seafood dishes. …..
