Penny tax heads for SC Supreme Court showdown

FLORENCE, S.C. — On October 1 the state Supreme Court will hear arguments for and against Florence County Council’s proposal to ask the voters to extend the capital project sales tax, or penny tax, for another seven years when the current tax expires in April 2014.

This lawsuit pits the state’s Attorney General Office and Department of Revenue against the county. It has added complications to what was already a confusing issue, made more so by the weight of unfinished roads projects remaining from the current penny tax.

But if Florence County is in the wrong, it appears it is not alone. …….
